String Quartet III, “Northern Shore”

String Quartet no. 3: “Northern Shore”

2014, duration 14:00

The main source of inspiration for this work is the varied Danish coastline, where I spend many enjoyable hours kayaking in all seasons and in all kinds of weather. The sea is changeable: sometimes calm, sometimes wild, sometimes relaxing, sometimes challenging, often unpredictable and nearly always compellingly beautiful. The work unfolds as a single movement made up of many sections that change either abruptly or gradually, with some sections returning in new contexts and varied order. The piece was commissioned by the Smith Quartet with financial support from the Danish Arts Foundation for premiere at the Minimalism Unwrapped festival in London on March 4th, 2015.
